The Importance of Secondary Intervention Following Detox

Some people with a substance use disorder (SUD) who consider medical detoxification for the first time tend to focus on the short term: control the physical withdrawal symptoms for a short period of time after which they think they will be fine. They erroneously believe that purging the addictive substance(s) from their body is the same as recovery from addiction.

Too many people with addiction continue to find out the hard way that detox is only the first step of the recovery journey. While medically supervised detoxification may handle the physical symptoms of the SUD, underlying psychological drivers of addiction may remain unaddressed without further treatment.

When it comes to recovery, the path to lasting sobriety isn’t always clear. Every addiction, every patient is different. In many cases, however, substance misuse is really a maladaptive attempt to cope with overwhelming emotional pain or stress. The team at Valiant Living Detox and Assessment goes beyond the medical detox and helps clients identify co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression and trauma and appropriate therapy options.

We created a transitional short-term residential program to make it easier for clients to consider the best way forward after the medical detox. The program helps clients and their families understand often unfamiliar treatment options better. Its emphasis is on post-detox stabilization and it prioritizes treatment planning and next-step care coordination.

“The goal is to get clients ready for the next phase of their recovery, whether that be another residential program, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, or another level of care,”  says the Chief Operating Officer at Valiant Living Detox and Assessment, Scott Lister, BSN, RN, CARN. “A typical day in the short-term residential program may include psych evaluations, cognitive functioning, biosocial and spiritual assessments, as well as therapeutic activities that help identify treatment goals.”

The goal is to provide patients with a safe place to land and find their bearings before deciding what comes next. Valiant Living Detox and Assessment provides detoxification as a primary intervention in a relaxing, home-like environment where patients can feel comfortable and safe. Once patients are stabilized and ready to continue with their recovery, we help them find the appropriate secondary intervention with professional, compassionate guidance.

Many clients require follow-up intervention in another treatment program and ideally aftercare following that. Addiction is a chronic disease and the risk of relapse is high without maintaining an appropriate level of care. The transitional program is an excellent opportunity to consider fully committing to recovery and engaging with further treatment.

The short-term program also gives the treatment team enough time to identify the needs of each patient individually and coordinate the transition to the next step in the recovery process. By having a good understanding of the strengths of the programs patients can be referred to, Valiant Living is able to create a seamless transition while communicating and coordinating with the professionals who will continue the care of the patient. Being in good hands every step of the way encourages and motivates people in early recovery, at a time when they need it the most to recover from their substance use disorder.
