Why Recovery Means More Than Just Sobriety

What It Means to Live Sober

If you have spent any time in 12-Step meetings, you have heard the words “recovery” and “sobriety” integrated into the shares. Although these words are used interchangeably, they do have different distinctions in their definition. Anyone attempting long-term cessation of drugs and alcohol will know the difference in what it means to be sober versus recovering from addiction. If the distinction is still unclear, here is the breakdown of both terms and what they mean for someone trying to end their addiction to drugs and alcohol once and for all.

What It Means to Be Sober

Sobriety simply means remaining abstinent from drugs and alcohol. Even though you do not drink or use any longer, this does not mean that you are taking care of yourself mentally, physically, or spiritually. Without educating yourself, you could become a “dry drunk.” We need to understand the reasons why we drank and used. Recovery means taking a close look at what happens to you physically and mentally under the influence and upping your attitude with gratitude. Someone who no longer drinks or uses drugs but otherwise maintains the same behavior patterns can be classified as a dry drunk. With no known cure for addiction, a person opting out of using relapse prevention tools means they are just sober, not recovering.

What It Means to Be in Recovery

You can broaden your horizons when you decide to get active in your sobriety. Taking advantage of therapy, the 12-Steps, a sponsor, and recovery meetings can reveal the solution to help you to stay sober for the long haul. You will continue to evolve as a person, and in your recovery, by taking every opportunity to learn about yourself to become the best sober person you can be. Being of service to others really allows you to discover the unity of recovery that will keep you on track. To help others who are less fortunate will provide you with some assurance that you are on the right path.

Getting sober is a big deal. Implementing recovery into your daily life is even greater. Through recovery measures, an individual can exhibit growth, heal wounds, and mend relationships. The sky’s the limit when recovery is used to improve all areas of a person’s life by first getting sober. Then, by using the recovery tools, they can enhance their sobriety and overall experience with the program’s promises.
