Detox and Comprehensive Assessment in Addiction Treatment

Everyone has different needs when it comes to treating a severe substance use disorder (SUD), a “treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences,” according to the American Society of Addiction Medicine. “People with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences.”

For clients requiring acute addiction treatment services,  Valiant Living Detox and Assessment is a 16-bed facility provides comprehensive care beyond withdrawal management to launch the recovery journey. Detoxification should be supervised by medical professionals. The treatment team at Valiant Living Detox and Assessment utilizes a multidisciplinary approach that includes a medical director, psychiatric nurse practitioner, LPNs, counselors, and addiction technicians.

Detoxing on your own at home by going “cold turkey” can be dangerous and frequently fails because the withdrawal symptoms become unbearable and people go back to using drugs or alcohol to alleviate the pain. While withdrawal from opiates and amphetamines can be very painful but is rarely life-threatening, detoxing from alcohol and benzodiazepines without adequate medical guidance can induce seizures that sometimes result in death.

Valiant Living Detox and Assessment accepts adult patients of all genders. Detox and stabilization typically require stays of 3–10 days at the facility. Medical stabilization supervised by a team of addiction professionals should be followed by a thorough assessment of the patient. “It’s about gathering so much information that we have a clear idea of what this person needs,” says Valiant Living CEO Michael Dinneen. “We try to find out what’s best for the patient which may not always be residential treatment.”

SUD is a complex disease that is frequently driven by underlying mental health conditions requiring multiple treatment modalities. People with addiction often try to self-medicate symptoms of trauma, depression, anxiety, and other conditions by misusing drugs and alcohol. Both the addiction and any co-occurring conditions need to be addressed in a multidisciplinary treatment approach to improve treatment outcomes.

At Valiant Living, a comprehensive evaluation of each patient will result in an individually designed treatment plan because no two cases of addiction are exactly the same. “We’re gathering a lot of collateral information from family, friends, and colleagues which often gives us great insights into the patient’s addiction,” says Dinneen.

“The treatment recommendation resulting from the multidisciplinary assessment is entirely based on the data we gather and not on preconceived outside verdicts,” says Scott Lister, RN, the director of nursing at Valiant Living Detox and Assessment.
